Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is one of Africa’s greatest adventures. The mountain rises to 5,895 meters (19,341 ft), making it the highest peak on the continent. It is also the tallest free-standing mountain in the world.
Unlike many other high-altitude climbs, Kilimanjaro does not require technical mountaineering skills. Therefore, it is accessible to trekkers with good fitness levels and determination.
There are several scenic routes to the summit. The most popular are the Machame, Marangu, Lemosho, and Rongai trails. Each one offers unique landscapes and acclimatization profiles. Most treks last 6 to 9 days, crossing rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and even icy glaciers before reaching Uhuru Peak.
However, Kilimanjaro is more than just a climb. It is also a chance to explore Tanzania’s world-famous attractions. Many travelers extend their journey with a Serengeti Safari, a trip to the Ngorongoro Crater, or a Zanzibar Beach Holiday. Together, these experiences create the perfect East African adventure.

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is one of Africa’s greatest adventures. The mountain rises to 5,895 meters (19,341 ft), making it the highest peak on the continent. It is also the tallest free-standing mountain in the world.
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and transfer to your hotel in Arusha. After check-in, you will meet your guide for a detailed briefing and equipment check. In the evening, you can relax and prepare for the trek.
After breakfast, drive to Machame Gate, where the adventure officially begins. From here, you will trek through lush rainforest filled with monkeys and colorful birds. As the trail ascends, it gradually opens into moss-covered trees before reaching Machame Camp.
Hiking time: 5–7 hours | Distance: 11 km.
Overnight at Machame Camp.
The climb continues as you leave the rainforest behind. Soon, the landscape changes into moorland with sweeping views of Kibo Peak. In addition, the trail offers glimpses of Shira Plateau, one of the most scenic areas of the route.
Hiking time: 4–6 hours | Distance: 5 km.
Overnight at Shira Camp.
This is an important acclimatization day. First, you ascend to Lava Tower at 4,600 meters, where you stop for lunch. Then, you descend into the Great Barranco Valley, which helps your body adjust to the altitude. As a result, this “climb high, sleep low” strategy greatly increases your chances of summit success.
Hiking time: 6–8 hours | Distance: 10 km.
Overnight at Barranco Camp.
The day begins with the famous Barranco Wall, a thrilling but non-technical climb. Although it looks intimidating, the views from the top are spectacular. Afterward, you continue across rocky ridges before reaching Karanga Camp. Consequently, this short stage provides additional acclimatization.
Hiking time: 4–5 hours | Distance: 5 km.
Overnight at Karanga Camp.
From Karanga, the trail steadily climbs through alpine desert until you reach Barafu Camp. Here, you will rest, enjoy an early dinner, and prepare for summit night. In fact, this is the final staging point before the toughest yet most rewarding part of the climb.
Hiking time: 3–4 hours | Distance: 4 km.
Overnight at Barafu Camp.
At midnight, you begin the final push to the summit. Step by step, you ascend toward Stella Point (5,739m), arriving at sunrise. From there, the trail continues along the crater rim until you reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Finally, after celebrating and taking photos, you descend to Mweka Camp for a well-deserved rest.
Hiking time: 12–14 hours | Distance: 19 km.
Overnight at Mweka Camp.
On the last day, you descend through the rainforest, where the air becomes warmer and more humid. Eventually, you reach Mweka Gate, where you will receive your summit certificate. Afterwards, transfer back to Arusha for a celebration dinner or onward journey.
Hiking time: 3–4 hours | Distance: 10 km.
